This October we’re launching a unique Masters programme in Ethnographic and Documentary Film teaching factual film practice at one of the world’s great research universities led by leading film professionals from the world of documentary. This unique programme will build on the experience in professional-standard technical training that the Open City Docs School has built up since 2008, as well as the world class strengths in social science research at UCL.By choosing to learn how to make documentary film here you will not only receive the highest quality practice based learning, but you will do so in a university research environment. Documentary film makers need to understand the world they live in – this course provides you with the full range of skills needed for this.

As a practice focussed MA the core of the teaching programme is practically oriented training in all the technical aspects involved in the preparation, production, editing and distribution of visual image. You will be taught not only how to make powerful, engaging and technically professional film narrative but also to consider about the fundamental question of ‘why’ we make films and about the relationship between subject and form, allowing you to give new shape to the social realities that your film research brings into being.

There are only five places remaining so if you’d like to apply you can find all the details here.
