Jean Rouch International Film Festival 2011

Seeing the World Differently

Jean Rouch International Film Festival
30th Ethnographic Film Panorama

November 7-12, 2011

Celebrating 30 Years

Please, pass this on to your colleagues, friends and students

From 8 to 10 March 1982, the first Bilan du Film Ethnographique was held in Paris. Since then, over 1300 movies from around the world have been screened, reflecting the social and cultural evolution of human societies and the richness of their diversity. Created by anthropologist and filmmaker Jean Rouch, this international event, in between culture and science, is organized by the Comité du Film Ethnographique.

Thirty years of cinema to see the world differently, to discover, understand and reflect on the future of man, to go beyond the description of placid reality, far off beaten tracks of exoticism, and finally to hear everybody’s voice. This aim carried on by the Comité du Film is more than ever relevant today, in a period of globalization and standardization. Another cinema about reality exists, that we are committed to screening and supporting.

During these thirty years, ethnographic film has undergone an unprecedented growth, due to evolution of the means of filmmaking, production, and distribution. The Festival’s mission is to present, each year, its most original and most relevant trends.

Screening films is necessary but not sufficient, we must also take time to open debates and promote discussions. For thirty years, the festival has dedicated, after each screening, a moment to generate interactions between filmmakers, researchers, producers, broadcasters, ethnographic film festival programmers and audience.

The Bilan du Film Ethnographique, that became in 2008, Festival International Jean Rouch, is an outstanding event. In 2011, we will celebrate its 30th anniversary, by organizing special events, to meet an increasingly enthusiastic and curious audience, in different places, such as Paris, French regions and abroad. These events will be an opportunity to get closer to new audiences and to continue the work of diffusion of ethnographic documentary films, achieved by the Comité du Film.

The Festival will be held between 7 to 12 November 2011
at the Maison des Cultures du Monde (101 Bd. Raspail, 75006 Paris).

Deadline for Submissions : April 15th, 2011
