>
> *CINEDUCACION
> Share your view
> *
> In April 2011, Chilean students started a national social movement aimed to achieve a free of charge and better education for everyone. Issues such as
> profit-oriented educational institutions and unequal access to opportunities were among the urgent-but-silenced topics they brought to
> public debate; through them, they wanted to challenge not only the educational system but the whole socio-economic model the country adopted
> during Pinochet?s dictatorship. According to the last national survey, their demands are currently supported by 80% of the population, revealing a > widely spread social unrest amongst Chileans.
>
> Standing from an active and engaged position with this social movement, we at Overlap -a Laboratory of Audiovisual Anthropology- have created a
> project called ?CinEducaci?n?, which can be translated both as ?Film+Education? and ?Without Education?. It is a collective digital
> platform designed to be used as a space of information, creation and public debate regarding education. The project was initially inspired by May 68?,
> when in the midst of the student revolts a group of French filmmakers -Godard, Resnais, Garrell and Chris Marker, from whom we have already
> received his active support- came out on the street to document the events. They produced short audiovisual essays, which later were projected under
> the name of ?Cin?tracts?. Like those filmmakers, we want to align ourselves with the student?s demands, but in addition, we?d like to take advantage of
> the internet and the ease of access to cameras in order to widen the call to the whole population, and not just to professionals. Despite the number
> of renowned filmmakers already engaged with the project (over 20, including Patricio Guzman, Gael Garc?a Bernal, Pablo Larra?n, Ignacio Ag?ero, Willem
> Dafoe and Cristi?n Jim?nez), our main purpose is to open a broad space where every creation is welcome and valued, and where no audiovisual > experience is required.
>
> We would like to invite you to be a part of this collective platform, sharing your own view about what is happening in Chile and around the world
> regarding education. It doesn?t matter where you live, which language you speak, if you are a professional filmmaker or a citizen armed with a phone
> camera; what matters is having something to say and to use audiovisual language to share it with us. Animations, collages, productions, voice
> over, text and all imaginable resources will be welcome. CinEducaci?n is a collaborative project which starts in Chile and is opened to diverse > approaches, so take your camera and speak up!
>
> *How to participate?*
>
> Simply produce a video of between 1 and 4 minutes, upload it to youtube or vimeo and register on www.cineducacion.cl. On our website you will be able
> to watch, comment and share all the material we?ve received. Starting next December, we?ll allow anyone to make a film by selecting, sorting and
> cuting the shared videos, thus challenging the idea of a unique and vertical editor. We are also organizing a series of free screenings at
> public spaces and cultural and educational centers, and next year we will produce an interactive DVD and a 90 minute documentary film with selected
> videos, which will be screened on movie theaters and sent to international film festivals. All published material will be licensed under Creative
> Commons, and we are currently working on getting funds to open an English version of the online platform. >
> In addition to inviting you to collaborate by sending videos, we encourage you to work with us by spreading the word on this project between friends > and contacts.
>
> If you have any questions do not hesitate to contact us.
> We look forward to having you on board.
>

Call for Papers
Marx at the Movies Conference
University of Central Lancashire
March 16-17, 2012

As the Lehmans Brothers filled for bankruptcy on September 15 2008 an era came to a halt. No more was there a belief that ‘the Market’ would work for the greater good as long as it was left un-regulated. As the belief in neoliberal theory and practice collapsed, many turned to the alternative theory – that of Marxism, not least because for Marx the challenge for human thought was not simply to understand the world but to change it.

Not for the first time Marx is ‘fashionable’. As David Harvey observes in his introduction to The Communist Manifesto: ‘The Communist Manifesto of 1847 is an extraordinary document, full of insights, rich in meanings and bursting with political possibilities. Millions of people all around the world – peasants, workers, soldiers, intellectuals as well as professionals of all sorts – have, over the years, been touched and inspired by it.’

The same can be said about filmmakers, film academics and students, in view of the fact that cinema, as a collective endeavour and as an industrial art, is an excellent ground to test Marxist dialectical thought. But how has cinema engaged with Marxist theory and practice? How has cinema engaged in processes to create radical social transformation, including decolonisation and the liberation of women? Is there a revival of Marxism in contemporary film theory and practice?

These are some of the questions we want to discuss during the two-day conference, hosted by the School of Journalism, Media and Communication in Preston –a town of great importance to the history of the working class, as testified by Marx and Engels’ writings. Papers are sought for topics such as:

The problems of conveying Marxist thought on screen (including attempts to screen Capital)
Representation of alienated and nonalienated labour and capital on screen
The work of Sergei Eisenstein, Bertolt Brecht, Jean-Luc Godard, Chris Marker, Dušan Makavejev, Satyajit Ray, Ousmane Sembène, Alexander Kluge, Ken Loach, Lars von Trier. Are they Marxist filmmakers? Western and Eastern Marxist film theory and history
Socialist production, distribution and exhibition of films
Marxism, Third cinema and the cinema of revolt
Marxism and feminist cinema
Marxism, realism and non-realism
Screen images of Marx, Engels and Lenin

I sounded interesting and worth spreading the news about it, especially for film lovers or for those more familiar with old films:

LOST FILMS is a new internet portal aimed at collecting and
documentingfilm titles, which are believed or have been declared “lost”. The ARCHIVE currently contains over 3500 entries,a number of which are extensively illustrated with surviving documentscontributed by archives and individuals worldwide. The IDENTIFY section contains images and short video clips of around 50 unknown or unidentified films, which face the danger of also becoming lost if not identified bymembers. The aim of LOST FILMS is not to produce a definitive list oflost films but to provide a platform where members can frequently – andfreely – exchange, add and update information.

LOST FILMS is an initiative of the Deutsche Kinemathek – Museum für Film und Fernsehen, Berlin. The project has been developed in close collaboration with the following institutions:

Bundesarchiv-Filmarchiv, Berlin
Friedrich-Wilhelm-Murnau-Stiftung, Wiesbaden
Centre national de la cinématographie (CNC), Paris
Filmarchiv Austria, Vienna
Národní filmový archiv, Prague

LOST FILMS has been made possible thanks to the generous support of the Kulturstiftung des Bundes (German Federal Cultural Foundation).

Film-making Workshops “Who is afraid of the Big Bad Crises?”

Dear all,

Please see below some information about 3 film-making workshops taking place in the Balkans:The workshops will aim to address the topical issue of “crisis” by developing 3 films all starting from the same moment of crisis and structured around the same ‘anchor moments’. During the workshops the selected young filmmakers will have the opportunity to meet and get to know each other, as well as exchange ideas about cinematography and the role of cinema, in the Balkan region. The main purpose of the workshops is to give participants time to envision and create short films addressing the subject of crisis, seen from different perspectives: economical, political, personal crises, etc.The moderators and trainers of the workshops will be the artists and filmmakers Effi & Amir: www.effiandamir.net

Each workshop will aim to produce a collective short film, challenging traditional film-making methods and instead of a linear creative process “writing, filming, editing” a new creative process will be developed and the three film-making stages intertwined (editing will take place throughout the process and not only at the end, writing will develop and emerge during filming etc), making the relations between writing, filming and editing much more dynamic. The collective short films will, of course, be co-productions created by teams of participants of different nationalities and will be shown in a public screening after each workshop, as well as during the 2nd edition of “Balkans beyond Borders” Film Festival, which will take place in Athens in June 2011.

Deadlines:
Skopje Workshop Dates: 30 March – 6 April 2011 – Application deadline: 15th of March 2011

Tirana Workshop Dates: 6 May – 13 May 2011 – Application Deadline: 1st of April 2011

Athens Workshop Dates: 15 June – 22 June 2011– Application deadline: 1st of May 2011
